Types of design

On my website, I divide my designs into Florals. Botanicals, Miscellaneous and Ditsies.
Florals cover a large variety of styles from Traditionals to freely painted Dress prints. I have a background in painting traditionals for furnishing prints. These are generally large scale designs, but can be done on a
smaller scale to make them suitable for dress prints.

Traditionals

Traditional designs are often used by furniture manufacturers, so it’s important to bear in mind the size of the cushions on chairs and sofas. If there is a main feature on the design ie. a bunch of flowers, then this has to fit the cushion size so that it sits in the centre of the cushion.

Botanical Designs

Wherever possible, I like to paint plants from life. The fruit and vegetable design originated from drawings in my sketch book. I scanned the images into my computer then manipulated them into a design using Photoshop.

Tropicals

Tropical designs are everywhere. They are used on swimsuits, sarongs, holiday wear, and shirts. They are often very bright colours, but can also be tonal featuring tropical views, palm trees and boats. Think of Hawaiian shirts in gaudy colours, and beach bags, and jungles, possibly with tropical birds and animals.
